The Master Gardener Program in Texas grew from a need for more
personnel in the Extension office.  More people to assist the public in
growing beautiful gardens and lawns, more people to do simple tasks such
as answer telephones, and help with office needs, and more people to talk
to garden clubs and other organizations that were interested in learning
more about the art and science of horticulture.
It was not feasible to hire all the people needed to do all these tasks, so the
reasonable thing to do was to train volunteers.
The program was begun.  Texas A&M had the people with the knowledge,
who taught the volunteers, and in return for gaining the knowledge, the
volunteers gave of their time, and shared the knowledge with the
community.  This is the Master Gardener Program.

The Jackson County Master Gardener Association is a part of the Jackson
County AgriLife Extension, working to educate the residents of Jackson County
and beyond in the area of horticultural education.

We strive to improve and encourage gardening, using environmentally sound
practices promoted by Texas AgriLife Extension, Texas Master Gardener
Association, Aggie Horticulture, and EarthKind.

The Jackson County Master Gardener Association pledges their active
participation in bringing current information to our community, and to improve
the quality of life in Jackson County through our various horticultural projects.

Jackson County Master Gardeners volunteered more than 2500 hours to their
community in 2008.
